From small grassroots programs to big international organizations, the Remala Foundation is proud to contribute to many different efforts that address educational, health, and community needs. Whether our grantees work in Seattle, India, or elsewhere, they are all driven to create equity and opportunity in communities that have been historically underserved. Below are just a few of the nonprofits we have been humbled to support.

  • API Chaya empowers survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking to gain safety, connection, and wellness. The Remala Foundation supports their work educating and mobilizing South Asian, Asian, Pacific Islander, and all immigrant communities to end exploitation and create a world where everyone can heal and thrive.

  • Childhaven partners with parents and community to strengthen families, prevent childhood trauma and its damaging effects, and prepare children for a lifetime of wellbeing. The Remala Foundation funds its early-learning program, which provides high-quality care to young children in a classroom setting that also connects families with a full range of health supports.

  • Forest Ridge is a private college preparatory school in Bellevue, Wash., that educates and inspires girls and young women grades 5–12 with a rigorous, integrated global curriculum. The Remala Foundation supports scholarships for lower-income students of color.

  • The Indian Institutes of Technology are prestigious, public technical institutes located across India. Rao Remala himself earned his master’s degree in computer science from the Institute in Kanpur, where the Remala Foundation has established an endowment to cover the costs of travel to international conferences for students pursuing their doctoral degrees in computer science.

  • The Remala family witnessed a number family members in India fall ill with chikungunya, a virus transmitted through bites by infected mosquitoes. Inspired to help prevent this disease, which is most common in Asia and Africa, The Remala Foundation supported chikungunya vaccine development by the Infectious Disease Research Institute.

  • The Modern Classrooms Project empowers educators to respond to every student’s needs using an instructional model that leverages technology to foster human connection, authentic learning, and social-emotional growth. The Remala Foundation supports training and support of educators as the model expands in Washington.

  • Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic provides medical, dental, behavioral health, and nutrition services for babies, children, and teens—regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The Remala Foundation supports their efforts to deliver coordinated, whole-person care that addresses root causes of illness, whether they be social, economic, or environmental.

  • Located in Bellevue, Wash., Overlake offers a full range of advanced medical services to the Puget Sound region’s diverse community. The Remala Foundation contributed to the hospital’s capital campaign to renew its campus and build a new 240,000 square-foot tower (opened in 2021), specifically the facility’s level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

  • Established in 1995 to provide education to children in Mumbai slums, Pratham is now one of the largest and most successful non-governmental education organizations in India, where more than 50% of 5th graders cannot read at the 2nd-grade level. The Remala Foundation supports the pursuit of their central mission—every child in school and learning well—with funding that addresses gaps in the education system, both inside and outside the classroom.

  • Rainier Scholars cultivates the academic and leadership potential of underrepresented students of color. The Remala Foundation contributes to their work providing rigorous, transformative opportunities that increase college graduation rates and empower new generations of leaders.

  • Rainier Valley Leadership Academy is a public, tuition-free, anti-racist charter school serving South Seattle students in grades 6–12. The Remala Foundation was among the founding donors who helped to open the school in 2017, offering an educational experience designed for the community, by the community.

  • The world’s largest free eye care program, Sankara Eye Foundation works to eradicate curable blindness in India, where nearly 40 million people, including 1.6 million children, are blind or visually impaired. The Remala Foundation supported a capital campaign to build a hospital in Vijayawada, where Sankara now provides free eye care and surgeries for people in the region.

  • Splash improves water, sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual health conditions for the urban poor, especially kids, because they are most vulnerable to waterborne illness. Funding from The Remala Foundation has supported Splash’s efforts to bring clean water and sanitation to 2,000 schools and nearly 500,000 children in Kolkata, India.

  • Wellspring aims to end family homelessness for good by connecting people with the resources and support they need to maintain and regain stability. Support from The Remala Foundation focuses on Wellspring’s Early Learning Center, the only program in Washington state that exclusively serves the needs of children, ages 1–5, who are experiencing the traumatic effects of homelessness.

  • The now-complete 30/30 Project improved access to quality, affordable healthcare for those who need it most, building 30 medical facilities around the world. The Remala Foundation supported a clinic that provides integrated healthcare services for urban and rural communities in West Bengal, India—specifically in the town of Baruipur and adjacent villages of the South 24 Parganas. Operated by iKure, the clinic offers primary care services, maternal and child healthcare, eye care, dental care, and telemedicine.

  • Zeno inspires a love of math in young children and families through family engagement and play, ensuring that kids of color have access to a strong math foundation and all of the education and career opportunities that come with it. The Remala Foundation supports Zeno’s ability to grow its reach in the Seattle area.
